HOMESTAY RENOK BARU
Bite into the delicious and mouth-watering pekasam, and you will be forgiven if you first turned your noses at its pungent smell. Savor it with glutinous rice and coconut shavings which you can eat all with bare hands for a more authentic experience. Pekasam, a local delicacy made with fish preserved in bits of salt and fried glutinous rice which is eaten with relish by the locals.
The process of making pekasam fish takes at least a week, and one can see up close the tedious process of making the delicacy at the small cottage industry in the village.
The leaves of misai kucing (orthosiphon stamineus), one of the village's bountiful herbs are harvested to make a special brew. It is highly prized as a drink to strengthen the body's defence system and has been traditionally drunk by Malays for centuries. The village also holds some special surprises for craft enthusiasts, as they specially make their own vases, baskets and household decorations from bits of old newspapers.
