HOMESTAY RUMAH PATRICK
The Rumah Patrick Libau Homestay Programme offers visitors the opportunity of staying in an Ibanese longhouse and taking part in the longhouse lifestyle. Guests stay with their host family, eat home-cooked food and have the chance to participate in daily activities.
Rumah Patrick Libau is located next to Niah National Park, so guests not only enjoy life in an Iban longhouse but they also get to see and experience the attractions of this world-famous national park. The Niah Caves are only a 15 minute walk from the longhouse so Rumah Patrick Libau serves as a convenient place to stay while going caving.
Niah has only been a national park since 1974, but people had been living in and around Niah's caves for at least 30,000 years, and possibly as long as 40,000 years ago. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia and its caves and virgin rainforest are also home to a variety of wildlife. That's why the Rumah Patrick Libau project is unique-because it combines traditional Iban hospitality with archaeological wonders and a natural heritage older than man himself.
The Rumah Patrick Libau homestay program is a community-based project which in addition to offering visitors a unique place to stay before exploring Niah National Park and the chance of experiencing longhouse life, the program aims to create an additional source of income for host families to supplement their income from traditional activities like farming, cultivation of the garden crops, fishing and the harvesting of bird's nests and guano.
